Prevent Blindness North Carolina (PBNC), through its Vision Screening Training Program, partnered with the IFB Solutions to deliver critical eye care to students in Tyrrell County—a rural district with limited access to vision services. Over two days, IFB’s mobile eye clinic, staffed by a doctor and an IFB team member, provided exams and glasses fittings for children identified as high-risk through screenings conducted by the county’s school nurse, Diana Spruill, who was trained by PBNC.
PBNC staff member Lynn Patterson coordinated logistics with Nurse Diana Spruill, ensuring the event ran smoothly. Thanks to their efforts, 50 students received exams, and every single one was prescribed glasses. “I literally felt like crying when we finished—out of joy, but also because it was such an accomplishment for our little district,” Diana shared. Her dedication, combined with PBNC’s training and support, made this life-changing experience possible for students who might otherwise go without care.

Adding a special hometown connection, PBNC board member Deborah Holland—who grew up in Tyrrell County—returned to assist students in selecting frames. The excitement was palpable as children tried on their new glasses, aided by a freshly purchased mirror so they could see themselves clearly for the first time. IFB expressed their commitment to continuing this vital work: “Everyone is so appreciative. We are going to try our best to make this happen again.”
For Tyrrell County’s students, clearer vision means brighter futures. PBNC is proud to lead efforts that transform lives in communities where resources are limited but hope is abundant.
