With sunny days and spring on the way, it’s a perfect time to make sure our preschoolers across the state are able to clearly see the world around them! The preschool years are pivotal for growing and learning, and vision plays a key role in fully experiencing all areas of life. Our Preschool Vision Screening team has been traveling across the state to check the precious eyes of children ages 2-5 and to help put a focus on healthy vision. During the 24-25 screening year, almost 40,000 preschoolers will benefit from our preschool program, which includes photo-refractive vision screenings and resources to help children with visual issues get the care they need.
We are grateful for the opportunity to play a role in the visual health of thousands of children each year and value our partnerships with childcare centers and preschools across NC. Positive feedback from participating centers confirms our sight-saving impact. Directors share how appreciative they are for our screening program, which often fills a gap in care for them. We help centers meet screening mandates and deadlines, while also providing a beneficial resource for their families. We are happy to share some of their positive comments below.
We look forward to this program coming into our center every year. I just feel like it is one more step to help families identify needs of their children. Over the years we have had several families take the screening results to the eye doctor and the children have gotten glasses.

We have several NC Prek programs that require this screening, so we will definitely need this screening again next year. We have had children whose parents took the need more seriously when given information by the expert. We love providing this screening for our families!

The screening is always quick and easy for the staff and children. It provides us with an early screening resource, and we have been able to help children who need glasses in the past. We had a child that was struggling with being very clumsy, held items very close to his face , and had trouble identifying friends and teachers by sight. After the vision screening we learned that he has severe vision problems. The parent had him seen by an optometrist and the school was able to help provide glasses for him here and at home. He was so happy to be able to see clearly and was able to be successful in our PreK program .
