You should!
Actually, anyone serving in the vision and eye care space, either professionally or personally. Many of our members are Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, Vision Screeners, or other busy professionals that wish to join a group of supporters furthering the mission and work of Prevent Blindness North Carolina while networking and promoting their own practice/firm as a member.
Prevent Blindness North Carolina is active in all 100 counties in North Carolina. The following is just a sample of the work that PBNC conducts throughout the state:
- PBNC provides photo-refractive vision screenings to pre-school children ages 2-5 using cutting-edge technology.
- PBNC collaborates with local Health Departments to provide vision screening training and support to nurses.
- PBNC conducts a community health-based retinal imaging program for diabetic patients in rural NC counties.
- PBNC provides vision screening certification training to volunteers in the public schools in all 100 counties. PBNC provides vouchers for free eye exams and glasses for under-served populations to all NC Health Departments.
- PBNC works with eye care professionals, local businesses, the State Division of Women’s and Children’s Health, and Prevent Blindness America to provide quality services and keep up to date on the latest developments in vision screening.
- All PBNC programs stress the importance of good eye health and regular eye exams.
- PBNC provides comprehensive referral and follow-up support for all who are screened. People found to have a potential vision problem are referred to their local eye care professional.
- PBNC provides annual adult vision screenings at the NC State Fair in October.
With the support of caring eye-care experts like yourself, the Professional Membership program played a key role in furthering Prevent Blindness North Carolina’s sight-saving mission during the 2023-2024 year:
- PBNC-trained screeners conducted an estimated 381,742 individual screenings during the school year. Approximately 11% of preschoolers and 10% of school-aged children screened were referred for follow-up care to professionals like yourself.
- 4,744 adults received vision screenings at health fairs, senior centers, health clinics, corporations and the NC State Fair, and 944 (20%) of those adults were referred for follow up care to professionals like yourself.
- 3,001 children and adults received financial assistance/vouchers for donated eye wear and/or eye exams.
- 26 North Carolina Doctors also contributed to the “Donor Docs” program, collectively agreeing to provide 86 free eye exams and 71 free pairs of eyeglasses for children and adults.
